Active Listening, or Deep Listening?

Bob Hughes writes: Ann-Maree Moodie from the Sydney Morning Herald's MyCareer asked me about the importance of active listening in business recently. My mind went back to many conversations when managers made a show of listening, then imposed their own agendas regardless of what was said.

What's more important than 'active listening', especially when here's so much change about and so many people are as fearful as they are now, is deep listening.

Deep listeners' attention comes from a still place within them and they hear what others say with compassion.

When, as a manager, you're not pursuing your own agenda, and thinking about what you're going to say next, then you can truly hear what's behind the words you're being told.

We're hearing a lot about spirituality in business, and the need to understand the bigger picture. It starts with paying true attention to the people you're with.

You can read Ann-Maree Moodie's full story from the SMH MyCareer here.
