Information On Elanco Animal Health and the "McDonald's Global Policy On Antibiotic Use In Food Animals"
Elanco Animal Health is committed to taking an industry leadership role and partnering with key food chain stakeholders from producers to consumers to ensure a safe food supply. Over the past years, Elanco has met with key customers as well as food chain stakeholders to discuss the science, issues and politics around the use of antibiotics in food animal production and antimicrobial resistance. This outreach has resulted in various collaborative efforts with companies and associations in discussing the sustainable use of antibiotics in food animals.
McDonald's invited Elanco and other stakeholders to collaborate on the development of McDonald's global policy for the sustainable use of antibiotics in food animals. Elanco's experience of discovering, researching and applying antibiotic technology to animal food production for over forty years provided a solid and unique perspective from which to collaborate with food companies to address sustainable antibiotic use policies.
We recognize the importance of food companies having policies to assure their customers that antibiotics are used appropriately in food animal production. We believe it is critical that these antibiotic policies reflect, align and build upon sound science and stringent regulatory processes. Elanco's experience provides scientific and practical insight into the judicious and sustainable use of antibiotics. This collaborative approach allows food companies to capitalize on a range of expertise as they develop a policy that ultimately meets the needs of their customers.
McDonald's policy is a market-based action that complements the ongoing transparent science-based processes addressing the issue of antibiotic resistance. They recognize consumer desires and they have a goal of maintaining leadership on marketplace dynamics and social responsibility issues. McDonald's Global Policy sets the stage for the sustainable use of antibiotics in food animal production while establishing guiding principles important for managing animal health. Key components of McDonald's Global Policy on Antibiotic Use in Food Animals include:
* Guiding principles for the sustainable use of antibiotics for the treatment, control and prevention of disease in food animals.
* Phasing-out the use of those antibiotics belonging to classes of compounds currently approved for use in human medicine when used solely for growth promotion purposes.
* Encouraging the judicious use of all antibiotics in food animals to ensure their long-term effectiveness without adversely impacting public health.
* This policy will be implemented through supplier certification; assurance programs or regular audits and phased in by the end of 2004.
The policy will be updated to remain consistent with the latest available scientific information.
Elanco Animal Health is pleased to have collaborated in the development of McDonald's new Global Policy on Antibiotic Use in Food Animals and looks forward to future initiatives that advance food safety, public health, animal health and animal welfare. These efforts are aligned with Elanco's policy on antibiotic use:
