The Olivier Group
The Olivier Internet Job Index provides a timely and fascinating monthly snapshot of the real economy.
The research into what jobs are advertised on the net shows where the economy is strongest, by sector and state.
An increasing number of commentators and economists are giving weight to internet stats and abandoning the newspaper ads as an employment indicator. John Edwards is quoted in this Shortlist article for example.
The very detailed full analysis is to be found on the Olivier site, along with archived material. We will carry each month's release here, too.
Record 303,000 Jobs On The Net.
Sydney, Tuesday April 10, 2007. The Olivier Internet Job Index grew again in March to average 303,124 job ads counted each week on the major Australian sites – an increase in raw terms of 15,875 job ads. This is a 4.23% increase, seasonally adjusted, in the month, and represents a 10.02% gain in the quarter and a 41.19% increase in the year. “We’ve had two months of very significant growth,” Robert Olivier says.
“Based on our lead indicator the ABS employment figures should continue to improve. Of course a strong, possibly overheated, employment market means wage pressure and buoyant consumer confidence. Our figures may be part of a picture that gives the RBA cause for another interest rate rise, as they review inflation pressures month by month.”
The Building & Construction, Education and Insurance & Super sectors have all had double digit growth in March showing the breadth of demand in the jobs economy. “Building and Construction growth has been broadly based across all states. Overall, the big sectors of Accounting, and Sales & Marketing are now only growing slowly in internet job ads. Increasingly employers are turning to other strategies to supplement their job ads on the net. “In the light of skill shortages recruiters are developing new channels to source talent, however as for the past seven years, the net has been the main method they use, so employers won’t stop putting their job ads on the net,” Robert Olivier says.
As the graduate hunting season starts there’s been a 9.49% increase in ads targeting university leavers this month, with Government, Public Service, Defence and Community jobs leading. Graduate job ads are up 31.51% over 12 months.
2007 – State Winners and Losers, first quarter
Over the past year Australia has been a tale of three economies. WA and Queensland are powering, with growth of over 60%, compared to the national average of 41.19%. NSW and Victoria with 30.57% and 34.69% are middling, while Tasmania languishes with internet job ads declining 7.84% in the year, and falls in 14 out of the 21 sectors Olivier surveys. “Our analysis shows that the multimedia boom is national. In the resource rich states, the tide has come in and all the boats are rising. As jobs increase, so does population, and other sectors benefit.”
