The Olivier Group
The Olivier Internet Job Index provides a timely and fascinating monthly snapshot of the real economy.
The research into what jobs are advertised on the net shows where the economy is strongest, by sector and state.
An increasing number of commentators and economists are giving weight to internet stats and abandoning the newspaper ads as an employment indicator. John Edwards is quoted in this Shortlist article for example.
The very detailed full analysis is to be found on the Olivier site, along with archived material. Robert Olivier is frequently interviewed by the media. Here he is on Sky News.
Jobs Flood Continues as Financial Year Ends.
Sydney Sunday July 8, 2007. The Olivier Internet Job Index has reached a record of almost a third of a million job ads last month, as the flood of Australian employment opportunities continues. There were 330,438 job ads counted in June on the three major job boards.
The Olivier IJI rose 3.72% (seasonally adjusted) in June – and has gained 45.62% in the past 12 months. “At this time last year we were wondering if job ads would top 250,000, now it’s grown by almost half again. Clearly, competition for employees is at a record high as Australia enjoys the lowest unemployment rate in decades,” says Graham Liu, Divisional Manager at Olivier Group. “
The recent ABS job vacancy figures showed that there are now less than three jobless people for every employment vacancy. The Olivier Internet Job Index shows just how fierce competition is between employers as they struggle to fill jobs.
While the overall jobs economy was strong there have been both positive and negative effects as a result of the end of the financial year. Some sectors, like Advertising and Media, which fell 5.33% in the month should bounce back as the new financial year’s budgets come into effect,” Graham Liu says. “The recent mergers and acquisitions within the sector have also slowed down job growth in the media.”
The two biggest increases this month were in the ‘Clever Country’s’ sectors – Education jobs jumped 18.21% and Science was up 12.76% in the month.
Other sectors, like Trades and Services which rose 4.63% in the month, may have been anticipating growth. “Given the tightness of the job market some employers with approval for new staff will already have started advertising. They’re thinking ahead and ramping up,” Graham Liu says.
IT&T may also have hit the end of financial year doldrums falling 1.89%, although it still ranks as the third biggest sector after Trades & Services and Sales & Marketing. Of those jobs Software Development and Engineering had the lion’s share of those jobs, followed by Management and Sales.
After rapid growth all year, the Multimedia Internet and Graphics sector slowed down, growing just 1.97% in the month. Given the strength of web based commerce, social networking sites and the growth of multimedia on the internet this is likely to bounce back.
Building and Construction sector job ads continued to be strong, rising 5.31% to bring yearly growth up to 105.06%. But despite the continuing resources boom, Engineering and Mining sector job ads eased off, growing just 0.23% in June.
Hospitality Tourism and Travel job ads grew 5.08% in the month, despite predictions that the rising Australian dollar would hurt the local industry.
Despite 10 billion dollars estimated to have flowed into Super funds in the past three months, Insurance and Superannuation employers weren’t doing any last minute hiring – job ads in that sector rose just 1.08% in June.
Graham Liu is a Divisional Manager of Olivier Group. The Olivier Internet Job Index surveyed 330,438 Positions Vacant ads on commercial job sites in June and analysed them by state and industry sector. Graham Liu is available for interview, and the microeconomic data including graphs of the industry sectors surveyed in the Olivier Internet Job Index will be available on Monday July 9 on www.olivier.com.au Unless otherwise noted, all IJI figures quoted are seasonally adjusted, based on ABS advice.
