The Olivier Group
The Olivier Internet Job Index provides a timely and fascinating monthly snapshot of the real economy.
The research into what jobs are advertised on the net shows where the economy is strongest, by sector and state.
An increasing number of commentators and economists are giving weight to internet stats and abandoning the newspaper ads as an employment indicator. John Edwards is quoted in this Shortlist article for example.
The very detailed full analysis is to be found on the Olivier site, along with archived material. Robert Olivier is frequently interviewed by the media. Here he is on Sky News.
Budget Swells Jobs.
Sydney Sunday June 3, 2007. The Olivier Internet Job Index rose 3.75% (seasonally adjusted) May – and has gained 42.71% in the past 12 months.
The Olivier Internet Job Index is at another new record again with 316,919 job ads counted on average last month. “We also saw 10.7% growth from week one to week four showing that employer confidence continues to be high,” Robert Olivier, director of the Olivier Group says. “On our figures the Federal Budget did nothing to impede job prospects and some of the changes, like the Child Care Tax Rebate, could help increase the participation rate.
While consumer spending was up just 0.1% in April according to the ABS, Olivier's Sales Marketing and Customer Service job ad sector boomed in May – up 7.27%.The ABS also reported last week that construction had grown 2.7% in the first 3 months of the year. That boom looks to be continuing with Building and Construction job ads up 7.54% last month.
Accounting (up 7.98%) and Legal jobs (up 8.20%) have surged for the end of the financial year.
The IT&T sector grew 4.60% in the month, with management and sales jobs predominating. IT&T is now second to Trades and Services as the second biggest sector overall. Multimedia fell 2.53% in May, and the sector, although strong over 12 months with a 96.63% increase, no longer boasts the most growth over 12 months. The Arts and Entertainment sector which grew 101.69% in the year is the new leader. “When commerce is strong, culture benefits,” Robert Olivier says.
The Olivier Internet Job Index is now regarded as a key indicator of the employment rate. The chart of the number of people in work and the Olivier Internet Job Index trend shows just how close the correlation is.
“On our figures we still think there's more strength in the employment market. And with more federal funds going into the economy before the election, that will help jobs even more,” says Robert Olivier. “Traditionally when there's political uncertainty, like a change of the Commonwealth Government, the employment market pauses; but we haven't seen that yet. If employers are concerned about the government's IR policy or a potential change under Labor we haven't had an indication,” Robert Olivier says.
