The Olivier Group
The Olivier Internet Job Index provides a timely and fascinating monthly snapshot of the real economy.
The research into what jobs are advertised on the net shows where the economy is strongest, by sector and state.
An increasing number of commentators and economists are giving weight to internet stats and abandoning the newspaper ads as an employment indicator. John Edwards is quoted in this Shortlist article for example.
The very detailed full analysis is to be found on the Olivier site, along with archived material. We will carry each month's release here, too.
Australia's Most (and Least) Wanted Jobs
Sydney, Sunday October 8, 2006. The Olivier Internet Job Index rose 1.34% in September, the ninth successive increase in a row, taking it to yet another record. For the first time a total of more than 250,000 job ads were counted in the final week of September, with the average for the month just under 249,000.
The Tech sector resurgence has been driving the jobs market. The IT and Telecommunications sector is up this month by 4.58%, principally in software development and management/sales roles. The smaller but trendier Multimedia Internet and Graphics sector has soared by 17.08% in the month, and 90.75% over 12 months.
However, the overall rate of growth has continued to slow for the third successive month. While the resource rich states of Western Australia and Queensland continue to do well, there are a variety of occupational winners and losers state by state. The Australia's Most Wanted table on the next page illustrates the highs and lows of job demand across the nation.
Job prospects in traditional professions continue to deteriorate. Legal jobs have grown just 5.98% in 12 months and accounting 7.01%. In comparison national job ads on the net have grown 34.11% in the past year. Accounting jobs are worst hit in NSW where they grew just 1.85% in the past 12 months.
“Legal is languishing and Accounting is crumbling,” says Robert Olivier of the Olivier Group. “But those sectors will be strong when the rest of the market falters.” It's not all bad news for lawyers – legal opportunities comprise the fastest growing sector in the Olivier Graduate Internet Job Index over the past 12 months.
The Financial sectors all fell this month too. Banking job ads dropped by 9.02%, Financial Services by 3.95%, and Insurance jobs were down 1.07%. Across the country Building and Construction jobs fell 5.06% in the month, as a consequence perhaps of the 12.6% decrease in building approvals in August.

Robert Olivier has welcomed the Federal Government's expansion of the Migrant Occupations In Demand list. “Australian companies aren't looking for workers overseas to save money, but because they simply can't find the people here. These skilled migrants are fulfilling a genuine need,” he says. The government's plans for offshore skills assessment centres to select migrants for the 457 visas will also help local employers.
“It's a higher risk strategy, and a more costly and time consuming process - there's more red tape than when you hire people locally. But our clients are recruiting internationally more and more. Many skilled people overseas are attracted to Australia, so they'll come to Sydney, while people for example from the ACT may be hesitant.” If companies can’t locate staff locally or internationally to work in Australia then they will be forced to move operations offshore.
Robert Olivier is a Director of Olivier Group.
