The Olivier Group
The Olivier Internet Job Index provides a timely and fascinating monthly snapshot of the real economy.
The research into what jobs are advertised on the net shows where the economy is strongest, by sector and state.
An increasing number of commentators and economists are giving weight to internet stats and abandoning the newspaper ads as an employment indicator. John Edwards is quoted in this Shortlist article for example.
The very detailed full analysis is to be found on the Olivier site, along with archived material. Robert Olivier is frequently interviewed by the media. Here he is on Sky News.
More Growth for Aussie Jobs, despite Rate Rise.
Sydney, Sunday September 2, 2007. The Olivier Internet Job Index rose 2.91% in August, with a total of 359,959 jobs counted on Australia's three major job sites, setting another new record.
Australia's online job market has grown by half again (50.81%) in the past 12 months. Our analysis shows that next month's results are also likely to continue to be strong.
"Clearly last month's interest rate rise did not quell Australian employers' voracious appetite for workers," Robert Olivier says. "The widely expected rate rise didn't change the employment horizon. Another rate rise is also unlikely to dampen demand, unless it has a big impact on consumer confidence," he adds.
14 out of the 21 industry sectors rose in August, with the biggest gain in Healthcare, Medical and Pharmaceutical (up 9.62%).
The Olivier Internet Job Index did track flat growth in the Building and Construction sector (up a marginal 0.06% in the month) which may be a consequence of the higher cost of borrowing.
Building and Construction has enjoyed the biggest growth over the past 12 months, rising 87.01%, and the sector tops the list of growth sectors in NSW, Vic and WA (see table below). However growth has steadied in recent months.
The biggest fall was in the small Arts and Entertainment sector which dropped 12.89% in the month. The cultural sector has enjoyed the greatest growth nationally over the past 12 months - rising 127.08% nationally and topping the rises in the major states. IT&T has bounced back with a rise of 4.51% in the month - bringing the yearly growth up to 46.47%.
With 457 visas recently in the news, Robert Olivier warns that any threats to change or reduce the availability of 457 visas may harm productivity. "It would be a serious impediment to business and economic growth. Australia's at full capacity - companies would rather recruit locally. It's only because there's an absence of candidates that they're forced to go overseas. If there needs to be some form of protection so they're not abused, then so be it, but Australia has some of the world's best laws protecting employees."
