Personal Presentation
Is there a presentation looming for you?
As you've probably heard, many people think that nervousness is the most daunting problem in personal presentation. We don't - in most cases, nerves are easy to fix, or control. We frequently say that it doesn't matter if you have butterflies in your stomach as long as they're flying in formation.
Sometimes intrinsically shy people have to face audiences, and there are very effective ways to help them feel more comfortable.
What's important is to know your message and get it across to your audience. We teach established structures to communication that can be applied with great effect.
All communication is about getting change in the listener. We hold ourselves to that principal - if we don't get significant noticeable change in the people we work with we'll renegotiate the fee.
Underlying good communication is the presenter's understanding of how their own model of the world works, and an understanding of their audience.
Many people underestimate the time and effort taken to create a great presentation. As frequent presenters we don't. It's hard work, but it can pay off handsomely.
We prepared one General Manager for a short speech of thanks at a staff Christmas party. She certainly put the principles into practice. Three months later she pitched to the board of a major bank, and won the account.
Presentations can be a problem, or they could be an opportunity. We can provide the expertise, but it doesn't work without a commitment from our participants.
But when a good presentation does pay off it can be the most marvellous feeling in the world. How you make the most of that is up to you, although we have some advice on that, too.
